“Turn Off the Lights” is a free browser extension, which dims the light of the website enabling more focus on the video player. The extension developed by Stefan Van Damme was initially released on 15th, December 2009 and since then has been regularly updated and enhanced with new features in order to meet user requirements.
Turn Off the Lights update the browser extension to version 4.2, it has new background improvements inside. And the Turn Off the Lights Browser extension is free for everyone. With the use of the “Turn Off the Lights” extension the whole screen can be dimmed except for the player. Following the downloading of the extension, a lamp icon will appear on the browser toolbar. By clicking on the icon the user can fade the screen area surrounding the video. The screen can be restored by clicking outside the player. The extension offers flexibility by giving the user the option to adjust the opacity of the screen dimmer and the color. The “Turn Off the Lights” extension can also be automated in order to dim the screen without the intervention of the user. A range of YouTube-specific features is also available in the extension, while keyboard shortcuts make way for quick access to the program’s services. In the latest versions of the “Turn Off the Lights” extension, it uses now the webp images technology for faster loading of the Options page. And when you change a setting in the Options page it will instantly load this new setting in all your open tabs page without the need to refresh that web page. The Atmosphere Lighting has a new option for the Vivid Mode that shows you the most realistic glow effect around the video player that matches the content of the video. It has here for this new automatic feature to get the glow effect showed by the frame of the video content. The Turn Off the Lights browser lamp is also redesigned in the web browser toolbar so it will be more outlined and visible when using a Dark Mode browser theme. Turn Off the Lights launched also the new Safari extension version that uses the Safari Web Extension technology. That means that the Safari Web Extension uses the 100% exact code as the Chrome extension version. That makes the development of the Turn Off the Lights browser extension in harmony with the other modern web browsers. The browser extension is written in JavaScript, HTML, CSS and is available in multiple languages. It is also a lightweight plug-in that will utilize only 3.40 MB of storage capacity.
